Golden Helicopter Award

It’s only when you travel that you come to appreciate just how good London cabbies are at their job. For the benefit of my overseas subscribers you cannot become a London taxi driver without “The Knowledge”. This is a very testing examination that you have to pass where you not only need to know every street and major building in the entire city but also the best way to get there.
They also ALWAYS have a view on local and world events – possibly slightly bigoted on occasions!- although that’s not part of The Knowledge as far as I know!
So a resounding GOLDEN HELICOPTER AWARD for outstanding service – over many years - goes to LONDON CABBIES!

TELL YOU WHAT……………..Let’s start a London cabbie anecdote blog here! Any stories you have about, or any experiences you’ve had with, London cabbies put them up here.

Cabbies make assumptions too!
When I first started my sales career back in the mid seventies, I was dressed in a THREE piece suit, but selling photographic retouching to Art Buyers of Ad agencies meant that they were dressed in tatty jeans and tea shirts. I was late for an appointment and with my black brief case in hand hailed a black cab near Harley Street. I told him where I wanted to go and said I was late. He said "Don't worry doctor, I'll get you there before he dies!" I made the appointment and no one died!

Some years ago travelling in a London cab up St. James's towards the Ritz. The road is split by traffic islands with connecting pedestrian crossings across the road. As we were approaching one crossing there was a pedestrian unable to make up his mind whether or not to cross in front of the taxi. He kept jumping back and forward until the cabbie pulled up, opened his window and asked "how on earth do you expect me to run you over if you keep jumping around like that?"
